Chapter 13

Matthias

Matthias realized after two long days of silence that he had deeply hurt Lilah that day in the parking lot of Clovers. He needed to make it up to her but wasn’t sure where to even begin, which was why he had to make the most of her need to talk to him privately today.

A part of him feared that this conversation was to tell him that she wanted to break up. It was partly what spurred him to do some gardening as it always managed to calm his nerves. Talking about his feelings had never been his strong suit, and he wished that he could hire a poet to stand beside him and interpret his words more elegantly. He knew that Lilah had started her volunteering practice yesterday, and he liked to think he was at least partly responsible for her returning to her roots even in this small capacity. It had to have been hard returning to the field and the possibility of seeing blood when it haunted her nightmares like an epic horror suspense movie. He wanted to help her through that now, but other things impeded them from having the best possible relationship.

Lilah had primarily been silent the entire ride to her cousin’s house.

Yet, she showed enough initiative to be a perfect mobster’s wife when she packed a cooler of ice packs for the boys and a small first aid kit.

Matthias thought it strange to be thinking about marriage this soon, but the woman quickly became vital to how he lives. Matthias never thought that he would miss someone in his arms as severely as he missed her when he woke up in bed alone.

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Lilah nervously tuck her thick kinky hair behind her ear.

“Ugh, hi, I don’t mean to interrupt.”

The world-weary, calming look on her pink cheeks looked lovely on someone so exhausted by it all. Matthias almost reached out for her but realized that wouldn’t be appropriate right now.

“You’re not the delivery boy, Lilah. You’re someone I care about tremendously,” he said, removing his gardening gloves.

She went over and sat on one of the navy blue ceramic stools that he kept out in the garden bed. He sat across from her, feeling the gulf between them that he was determined to swim across.

He had turned a part of his backyard into a flower garden. Most of the flowers had been planted by hand and included daylilies, perennial blanket flowers, and alternate-leaf dogwood. They were carefully chosen from some of his favorite nurseries, a couple of which had to be specially ordered, with the majority just bushels that caught his trained eye.

Matthias did a lot of entertaining out here on his outdoor patio, but the garden wasn’t readily visible to passerbys. It was primarily his oasis, and he wasn’t to be disturbed when he was tending it, which was how he knew that Kees sent her out here to him. Anyone else would’ve been told that he wasn’t home.
